EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN UNIVERSITY
The Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU; Turkish: Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi) is a university in Northern Cyprus. It was established in 1979 under the leadership of Onay Fadıl Demirciler (then Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education) as a higher-education institution of technology for Turkish Cypriots. In 1986, it was converted to a state university. The campus is located within the city of Famagusta.
The university has 141 programs (11 Faculties and 5 Schools) offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as a research infrastructure. The languages of instructions are Turkish and English. However, an English Preparatory School is available for students who need to improve their English.The university also offers a variety of sports and social activities. Academic Programs of EMU are broad and include Physical and Social Sciences with considerable research studies via Research Advisory Board.
Campus
In Famagusta, the second largest city of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with a population of 35,000 and the center of history, culture, arts and education, cafes, restaurants, pubs and shopping centers in and around the city center are places with a heavy student influx. This area is also decorated by the island’s most beautiful coastline. Eastern Mediterranean University Campus is 3 km from Famagusta city center. away. This means that the University is within walking distance of the city center and that the University and the city form a whole.
The city was first established in the 3rd century BC by I. Ptoleme under the name “Arsinoe”. As a result of the sacking of Salamis by the Arabs in 647/648 AD, immigrants from here settled in the city. When Akka was taken during the Crusades in 1291, those who migrated from there settled in the city. As a result of the arrival of merchants along with the people, the city became rich and important and became a trade center thanks to Famagusta Port. The Lusignan kings, who also ruled Jerusalem during the Lusignans period, until 1372, the St. He was crowned in St. Nicholas Cathedral. During this period, many churches were built in the city. In 1372, the Genoese captured the city, the city remained under Genoese rule until 1469 as per the agreement, and then returned to the Lusignans.
The castle passed into the hands of the Roman and Eastern Roman Empires, Latins and Venetians until the Turks II. It was conquered by Turkish troops on 6 August 1571 during the Cyprus Campaign during the Selim period (1566-1574). The castle, which remained under Turkish rule until 1878, was left to British rule in 1878 along with Cyprus.
Famagusta, which became one of the important tourism resorts of the Republic of Cyprus, which gained its independence in 1960, was captured by Turkish troops during the Cyprus Operation in 1974. The city has become one of the important port, tourism and university education centers of the Cyprus Turkish Federal State, which was declared in 1975, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which was established in 1983.
